With so many spas in Scottsdale unique treatments are key to standing out. One spa uses local gems in a treatment while another offers a service conducted by a monk.

These unusual services are unique to the Valley of the Sun and offer even the most experienced spa diva something new and different.

The Amethyst Body Renewal Treatment

The Spa at Copperwynd in Fountain Hills, gets its inspiration for its signature amethyst body renewal treatment from the local landscape. The Four Peaks Amethyst Mine is visible from the spa, and its premier amethysts are used in the treatment. The crystal is believed to have purifying and pacifying healing powers, and is known to calm the mind and absorb negative energy.

The 90-minute service begins with an invigorating dry body brushing to cleanse toxins out of the lymphatic system. Next a simple scrub of salt, sugar and oil is slathered over the body to exfoliate the skin. Since the spa doesn’t have a wet treatment room, the locker room shower is used to rinse off and apply moisturizing oil. (Perhaps the only awkward part of the treatment) Upon returning to the treatment room, the therapist begins a luxurious hot stone massage using the lavender and amethyst lotion specially created at the spa. The massage ends with a wrap so as to let the essence of the amethyst infuse into the body.

The Tibetan Yoginic Massage

The VH Spa at the retro-chic Hotel Valley Ho offers up what has to be one of the most unique spa experiences available anywhere. The Tibetan Yoginic Massage should come with a disclaimer—it is not for the spa newbie. But for an old pro, the treatment is one-of-a-kind. The therapist, Dhargya, was a monk in Tibet for 17-years before turning his attention westward.

The experience starts with a long stretching where the exacting positions of the move will stretch even the most un-gumby like into positions that seem hard to maintain (although the monk has no problems!). In a series of stretches, Dhargya will increase muscle flexibility by positioning the person correctly, and by using his weight to throw the spa goer into a zero gravity positioned balanced on his back. The combination of stretches, weightlessness and acupressure will move someone’s muscles in ways never imagined. Because the moves are intense and deep, there are times during the treatment when tight muscles will scream for the stretch to end. Thankfully, the experience concludes with a soothing massage—a welcome respite for overworked muscles. The goal of the treatment is to leave the person completely relaxed and increase mobility.

To feel like you've had a spa treatment try yoga taught in a heated environment I can recommend the Bikram style yoga classes at Sumits Yoga. The addition to a heated environment to the yoga experience is pretty incredible - much easier on joints and ligaments, you experience the benefits of the postures more easily and it even causes the body to burn fat more effectively. You'll feel like you've been to a spa. Visit online at www.SumitsYoga-Phoenix.com.
