From an easy stroll to an elevated climb, numerous hiking trails offer a chance to get close to Sedona's signature red rock formations that surround the area.

The Red Rock country of Sedona, Arizona can be viewed from any spot in town. But the best way to appreciate the magnitude of the steep rock towers and cliffs is to view them on foot. Some of the trails traverse high desert terrain; others go through pinyon pine forests or over flat red stone mesas. But all of the trails are accented by the high red rock peaks that dominate the Sedona skyline.

Trails in Uptown Sedona

Just above the uptown Sedona shopping region, there are a series of connecting trails with access from Jordan Road. The Brin Mesa trail, Soldiers Pass trail and Jordan trail form a 4 mile loop with moderate climbs along the way. The terrain covers cottonwood and pine forests, high country meadows and smooth red rock mesas. Set within one of the mesas along the Jordan trail are the seven sacred pools, small natural water basins precious to early Native American residents. Sure footing along this trail is important to avoid a large pit caused by years of erosion and falling rocks. All of the trails in the uptown area are bordered by 360 degree views of red rock towers and multicolored sandstone formations.

Trails in Oak Creek Village

A few miles south of town, the Oak Creek Village area is less busy than uptown Sedona and harbors additional hikes with stunning red rock views. Bell Rock, named by the first Sedona settlers because of the obvious bell shape, has easy hikes with flat, wide pathways that are suitable for walking or bike riding. The Turkey Creek trail is a less traveled hiking trail accessed from the residential Verde Valley School Road. The landscape includes manzanitas trees, prickly pear cactus and grassy wildflower meadows. The hike peaks at an altitude climb of 600 feet where breathtaking views of the Sedona valley and surrounding red rock can be seen.

Trails in Oak Creek Canyon

Oak Creek Canyon, found along Rte. 89A, is one of the most beautiful drives in Arizona. The 21 mile route to Flagstaff passes through a narrow canyon that travels beside the winding Oak Creek and continues past Slide Rock State Park. The road culminates at Oak Creek Vista, a photographer’s dream site, where an authentic Native American jewelry and art market stands. There are many trails along the canyon route and within the parks. Parking can be limited so an early start is recommended.

The autumn weather in Sedona typically means cool, sunny days with clear blue skies. Many of the trails have little shade allowing unobstructed views of the magnificent red rock cliffs. Fall is an ideal time of year to visit Sedona and to enjoy an outdoor experience in the unique and stunning red rock region of Arizona.

Detailed trail maps can be found at several tourist information centers.
