It's a fair drive to visit Grand Canyon West from Flagstaff or Las Vegas. Kingman, AZ and nearby towns have a range of hotels and motels with easy access to the Skywalk.

While many people visit the Grand Canyon via Flagstaff, Arizona or Las Vegas, Nevada, Kingman, Arizona is the closest city to the Skywalk and its more remote entrance at Grand Canyon West. Kingman, which is 70 miles from the site, and other nearby towns have a range of hotels, motels and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets.

Historic Route 66 runs through the heart of this former railroad and mining town, and it has long catered for motorists on cross-country road trips. Today Kingman real estate is booming and it's one of fastest growing communities in the state.

Route 66 becomes Kingman's main street at Andy Devine Avenue, named for the character actor and native son who appeared in many old Westerns. Many of the city's accommodations are located along here.

Most of the major US motel chains are represented in Kingman, including Best Western, Comfort Inn, Days Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Motel 6, Ramada Express and Travelodge. The Quality Inn has a Route 66 theme, with old-fashioned gas pumps and other mementoes from the Mother Road in the lobby.

There are also many independent motels, some of which, like the Arcadia Lodge, hark back to the golden era of Route 66 in the 1950s. The inexpensive Silver Queen Motel is another popular independent choice.

The Hotel Brunswick is Kingman's most historic place to stay. In the heart of town on Andy Devine Avenue, its facade is straight out of the old West. It was built in 1909, and its lobby decor and furnishings still reflect that era. Clark Gable was among celebrities who once stayed here.

Accommodations include several suites with living room, dining room and kitchen. The en suite guest rooms have quaint furnishings and decor. Those on a budget can opt for a cozy Cowboy or Cowgirl room, with shared bath. Room rates range from $30 to $175 and include continental breakfast.

The Hotel Brunswick has an on-site restaurant, Hubb's Bistro, and Mulligan's Bar. Hotel managers Jason and Jennifer Pfaff are certified wine sommeliers, and Jason, an experienced chef, also supervises the kitchen.

A few miles away in the mountains northwest of Kingman is the 1860s silver mining town of Chloride. Here Sheps Miners Inn offers more characterful lodgings in its 15 rooms, all with private bath, in a historic adobe building ($35-65). Some of the rooms have beautiful western-themed murals painted by Tony Mafia. Another adobe building houses Yesterday's Restaurant.

East along Route 66 at Peach Springs, Hualapai Lodge is owned by the same Native American community that operates the Skywalk. It has 60 rooms, a heated salt water pool, jacuzzi and fitness room. The Diamond Creek Restaurant features Native American dishes. Packages which include a visit to Grand Canyon West and the Skywalk are available, starting from $99.95 per person.

If you can't wait to try your luck in Nevada's casinos, River Palms Resort & Casino is just 35 miles from Kingman, over the border in Laughlin. It has over 1,000 rooms and suites, four restaurants, various bars and lounges, entertainment, pool and other amenities.
